The Netherlands showcased a formidable display, securing a 3-0 victory over Romania to advance to the Euro quarterfinals for the first time since 2008. This emphatic win came on Tuesday during their round of 16 clash and was highlighted by standout performances from Cody Gakpo, Donyell Malen, and Virgil van Dijk.
Dominant Display
The Netherlands commanded the game from the outset, controlling two-thirds of possession and recording almost five times more attempts on goal than their opponents, with a total of 24 shots. Despite Romania's initial control of the tempo in the first 15 minutes, the Dutch quickly overturned the early pressure and took charge.
Cody Gakpo continued his impressive form, netting his third goal of the tournament and setting the tempo for his team. In the closing minutes, Donyell Malen delivered a remarkable performance, scoring two late goals to seal the match. His first goal arrived in the 83rd minute, courtesy of an assist from Gakpo, and he added the second in stoppage time.Keys to Success
Reflecting on the team's performance, captain Virgil van Dijk expressed his satisfaction with their defensive solidity and overall execution. "Very proud, sure, and pleased as well. We were defensively sound and solid and did not give up much," he remarked. Van Dijk, who nearly scored with a header that hit the post, emphasized the team's self-awareness and readiness to respond after their previous 3-2 loss to Austria. "We could have scored a lot more. After a turbulent week, where a lot was said, we had to show something and we did that. We are self-critical and we knew it had to be a lot better after the last game and everyone had to take responsibility, and today they showed they wanted to."
Head coach Ronald Koeman shared similar sentiments, highlighting the lessons learned and adjustments made following their last match. "I thought there were a lot of good things we did. The team realized that the last game was really bad in all aspects and so they have given out a strong message. We played well in the whole game, except the first 10 minutes when there was a lot of pressure," he observed.Tactical Mastery
Koeman further explained the strategic insights that underpinned their victory. "We had analysed Romania well. Belgium showed us there was a lot of space to exploit [against Romania]. But it took a long time before we got the second goal," he noted, underscoring the meticulous preparation that went into the match.
Despite Romania's pressure in the early stages, Koeman never doubted his team's defensive prowess. "I wasn't scared they'd equalise because we defended so well. I thought Xavi Simons was our best player too, he drove the team forward and was nice and aggressive."Player Perspectives
Gakpo, reflecting on the match, was satisfied with the team's response and their overall performance. "This was the answer we had to our last performance -- good game, good goals, we played good football." He acknowledged room for improvement but viewed this as a positive step forward. "Of course we could do better but a good showing after the last game. A good step in that next direction. We felt we were in control even though they were a dangerous opponent."
The Netherlands now look ahead to their quarter-final fixture, set to take place in Berlin on Saturday against either Austria or Turkey. With confidence riding high and a resurgent team spirit, the Dutch are poised to continue their quest for European glory.
