Breaking Barriers: Jessica Campbell Joins Seattle Kraken as Full-Time Coach

In a historic move for the National Hockey League (NHL), Jessica Campbell has been appointed to the Seattle Kraken coaching staff, making her the first woman in the league’s history to serve as a full-time coach. Campbell's groundbreaking appointment marks a significant milestone in the hockey world, as she brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record in player development.

Prior to joining the Kraken, Campbell served as an assistant coach with the Coachella Valley Firebirds, where she managed the team's power play and played a pivotal role in the development of young talent. Her efforts culminated in Tye Kartye's standout season, which earned him the 2023 AHL Dudley "Red" Garrett Award for the most outstanding rookie. Kartye's impressive stats included 20 points, with 11 goals and nine assists over 77 games for the Kraken.

Kraken coach Dan Bylsma praised Campbell's commitment to player development, emphasizing the importance of her relationships with players such as Tye Kartye, Shane Wright, and Ryker Evans. "During our tenure in Coachella Valley, I saw firsthand Jessica's commitment to player development. Her ability to establish relationships with her players, specifically Tye Kartye, Shane Wright, and Ryker Evans, was an important factor in this hire. I'm looking forward to continuing to work with her at the NHL level," Bylsma noted.

Campbell’s journey to the NHL has been nothing short of remarkable. In 2022, she became the first woman to coach in the American Hockey League (AHL) and subsequently made history again by coaching Team Germany’s men's national team during the 2022 IIHF Men's World Championship. Her innovative approach and tactical acumen have earned her widespread respect within the hockey community.

A self-described advocate of maintaining a growth mindset, Campbell remains focused on her coaching duties. “For me, that's what it's about. Just putting my head down and doing the work. You know, where it takes me it takes me, but I'm obviously honored to be on this path and continue to just do the good work that it takes to hopefully reach that goal,” Campbell shared.

Campbell’s influence extends beyond her coaching responsibilities. She has been instrumental in power-skating coaching for elite athletes, including Natalie Spooner and Joel Edmundson. Her experience coaching various levels of hockey, including her stint with the Nurnberg Ice Tigers in 2021, equips her well for the responsibilities awaiting her in Seattle.

“I just focused on the task at hand in coaching, but absolutely, it's obviously a tremendous opportunity and I'm honored to be where I am and to be—it's a humbling feeling to be a part of the Kraken organization,” Campbell said, reflecting on her new role.

One of her key contributions to the Firebirds was her management of the power play, a responsibility she is expected to continue with the Kraken. Her previous experience collaborating with Kraken goaltender Philipp Grubauer during the 2022 IIHF Men's World Championship further demonstrates her versatility and adaptability in high-stakes environments.

Under Campbell’s guidance, the next generation of Kraken players, including standout rookies and seasoned professionals alike, are poised to benefit from her expertise. Her track record speaks volumes about her capability to enhance player performance and foster team cohesion.

As the Seattle Kraken look towards future successes, Campbell's appointment signifies a progressive step for diversity and inclusion within the NHL. Her achievements pave the way not just for women in hockey but for all aspiring coaches who aim to break new ground in professional sports.

“I'm a big believer in just keeping a growth mindset every day. Obviously, my goal is to continue to coach at the highest level, but timelines aren't necessary for me and definitely not where my focus is,” Campbell emphasized, underlining her dedication to personal and professional growth.

For the Seattle Kraken and the wider hockey community, Campbell's groundbreaking role is a testament to her dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the sport. With such an accomplished and inspiring figure joining their ranks, the Kraken are well-positioned to usher in an era of innovation and excellence.
