In a flurry of activity over the past few days, John Schneider, the general manager of the Seattle Seahawks, has been busy reshaping the team's roster. In an unprecedented 96-hour stretch, Schneider executed three trades, bolstering the Seahawks' lineup as the team prepares for the upcoming Cut Day.
On Monday, the Seahawks sealed a deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars to acquire linebacker Trevis Gipson. In exchange for Gipson, Seattle will send a "late-round" pick to Jacksonville. The trade comes as a slight surprise, considering Gipson joined the Jaguars as recently as March and leaves the team without having played a single down.
Gipson brings a considerable track record to Seattle. Last season, he played with the Tennessee Titans, where he appeared in eight games. Prior to his stint with the Titans, Gipson spent three seasons with the Chicago Bears, starting in 19 games. His most noteworthy season came in 2021 when he recorded seven sacks, showcasing his ability to be a disruptive force on the defense.
The urgency of acquiring Gipson was likely influenced by the recent injury to Uchenna Nwosu. Nwosu strained his MCL during the Seahawks' preseason win over the Cleveland Browns on Saturday and is expected to be out for two to six weeks. This injury undoubtedly necessitated a quick response from Schneider to fill the defensive gap.
The trade for Gipson was just one part of Schneider's recent flurry of moves. On August 22, the Seahawks executed a player-for-player trade with the Carolina Panthers, exchanging cornerback Michael Jackson for linebacker Michael Barrett. This was quickly followed by another move on August 23, when Seattle traded linebacker Darrell Taylor to the Chicago Bears in return for a 2025 sixth-round pick.
Earlier in the month, on August 11, the Seahawks also made a trade with the Cleveland Browns, signaling a proactive approach to roster management as the season looms. With Cut Day approaching on Tuesday, teams across the NFL are finalizing their rosters, often resorting to trades to offload players who might otherwise be released.
