Former NFL wide receiver and return specialist Jacoby Jones, celebrated for his remarkable contributions to the Baltimore Ravens' Super Bowl XLVII victory, passed away peacefully at his home in New Orleans on Sunday, just days after turning 40.
Jones' career was punctuated by unforgettable moments and record-setting performances, and his impact on the field has left an indelible mark on NFL history. His extraordinary 108-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII remains the longest in Super Bowl and postseason history. Moreover, he also caught a 56-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Joe Flacco in that unforgettable game, amassing an astounding 290 total yards, a Super Bowl record.
During the 2012 season, Jones played a critical role in securing Baltimore's double-overtime victory against the Denver Broncos in the AFC divisional round, catching a crucial 70-yard receiving touchdown. His contributions were pivotal to the Ravens' path to the championship.
A Remarkable Career
Drafted in the third round by the Houston Texans in 2007, Jones spent his first five NFL seasons in Houston, where he set the franchise record for career punt return average at 10.2 yards. His career reached new heights upon joining the Baltimore Ravens in 2012. Jones quickly became a First-Team All-Pro returner and earned Pro Bowl honors, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest return specialists in the game's history.
Jones holds multiple Ravens records, including the highest career kickoff return average (30.1 yards) and the highest single-season kickoff return average (30.7 yards in 2012). After his tenure with the Ravens, Jones had brief stints with the Chargers and Steelers in 2015 before officially retiring as a Raven in 2016.
Post-retirement, Jones dedicated his time to mentoring young athletes, serving as the head coach for the Beaumont Renegades football club in Beaumont, Texas. His influence extended beyond the field as he nurtured the next generation of players with the same passion and dedication that characterized his NFL career.
A Legacy of Connection and Joy
The Baltimore Ravens released a heartfelt statement expressing their “deepest condolences” to Jones’ family, highlighting his unique ability to connect with everyone he encountered. “Jacoby had the unique ability to connect with everyone he encountered. His charisma, joy, and love created a one-of-a-kind presence that could light up any room or brighten any dark day,” the statement read. “Jacoby will long be remembered not just for his success on the football field, but for the lasting personal connections he made with countless people in the Ravens organization, Baltimore community, and every area he called home.”
Ravens head coach John Harbaugh reflected on the personal bond he shared with Jones: “I loved Jacoby Jones, we all did. His spirit, enthusiasm, and love for people were powerful. He was a light. He was the cherished son of his loving mom, Ms. Emily. They were so close. He was a man of faith. My favorite Jacoby personal moment was every time I saw his smiling face full of joy. Rest in peace, Jacoby, in the arms of Jesus.”
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin also shared his condolences: “My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family of Jacoby Jones during this difficult time. I enjoyed coaching him during his time with the Steelers.”
Sam Gordon, owner of the Beaumont Renegades, remembered Jones fondly: “He was the best, he loved everyone. I think one of the most important things is he was a man of God. He was proud of how much he loved and feared his God. What was most important to him after football was helping the next person in line. He was the most humble and kind person to anybody who gave him the time and needed the time from him.”
Jones is survived by his son, also named Jacoby, and his mother, Emily. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of many who admired him not only for his athletic prowess but also for his genuine kindness and humility.
The football community mourns the loss of a remarkable player and extraordinary human being whose legacy will continue to inspire players and fans alike. Jacoby Jones' journey from the gridiron to mentoring young athletes serves as a testament to his enduring spirit and dedication to the game he loved.
