Jaylon Johnson Reacts to Being Omitted from NFL's Top 100 List
Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson has had a standout season in 2023. Johnson secured second-team All-Pro honors and earned a Pro Bowl bid, yet he was surprisingly left off the NFL's Top 100 list.
The 2023 season was a career-defining year for Johnson. He notched a career-high four interceptions, including his first-ever pick-six, and forced one fumble. His performance was a testament to his defensive prowess, holding opponents to a mere 50.9 passer rating when targeted and allowing just a 55% completion rate.
The NFL's Top 100 list recognized only two Bears' players: wide receiver Keenan Allen at No. 51 and defensive end Montez Sweat at No. 82. Johnson's exclusion from the list has sparked controversy and disappointment, particularly from the player himself.
"Bull----," Johnson exclaimed when asked about the snub. "It's bull----. There ain't no way. I don't know how you make Pro Bowl, All-Pro and not [be] a Top 100 guy. I could've been 101 I guess, but goddamn, [New York Jets quarterback] Aaron Rodgers didn't even play in the season and he was voted [92nd]."
Johnson's critique continued, emphasizing what he perceives as a lack of recognition for his contributions on the field. "I mean, hey, everybody makes mistakes, it ain't just the media that do it. Players clearly -- if they voted for it -- they made some god damn mistakes. But it is what it is. At the end of the day I know the truth and it's alright, I got some more for them."
This sentiment speaks volumes about Johnson’s motivation. His dedication to the sport and his team remain undeterred. "It's disrespectful because I go out there, line up and I know receivers go out there and can't say that I'm not one of the best players that they play against," he declared.
Despite the snub, Johnson is using the omission as fuel for further success. "So I mean, whatever it is, it happened. Doing it wouldn't have moved me to where I'm complacent, but just to see it -- ain't no way there are 100 guys who are better. Ain't no way. Especially guys who didn't play, who were hurt, played half- ain't no f---ing way. Excuse my language. Ain't no way. Ain't no way." His words highlight a mixture of frustration and determination, embodying the fighting spirit of a top-tier athlete.
The snub will "100% motivate" him as he prepares for the upcoming season. Johnson recently secured a four-year, $76 million contract extension in March, a testament to the Bears' belief in his talent and potential. The significant investment underscores the organization's commitment to his future with the team.
Colleagues and fans alike will be watching closely as Johnson channels his energy and focus into the next season. The cornerback's resolve to prove his merit is palpable, and his reaction to the Top 100 list only adds to the anticipation of what he will bring to the field in the future.
In a league that thrives on competition and recognition, Jaylon Johnson's journey is a reminder that accolades, while important, are not the sole indicators of a player's value and impact. His story serves as an inspiration to athletes facing similar challenges, demonstrating that perseverance and performance on the field are what truly define a player's legacy.
